Russia Strongly Opposes UNSC Resolution that Could Justify Foreign Intervention in Syria

Sep 7, 2012 - MOSCOW, (SANA) - Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia will strongly oppose any UN Security Council resolutions that could justify foreign intervention in Syria's affairs.

In an interview with the Chinese Television, Lavrov said that settling the crisis in Syria is possible only through dialogue in accordance with Geneva statement issued on June 30th.

He added that the stance of Russia and China at the UN Security Council is based on the need for reaching an agreement on means of influencing on this crisis or that in a way that allows easing the situation and moving to political negotiations instead of being used to support one party at the expense of the other one.

Lavrov reiterated his country's rejection of repeating the Libyan scenario in Syria, adding that Russia and other international parties which participated in Geneva meeting agreed on essential principles to solve the crisis in Syria and they should be implemented.

The Russian Foreign Minister viewed the western countries' demand of the Syrian government to withdraw troops and heavy weapons from cities before calling upon the armed opposition for a truce as unrealistic approach "since it is, in point of fact, an appeal to the government for unilateral surrender."

It is a public secret that Ban Ki-moon, who has been posted twice to the Republic of Korea embassy in Washington, D.C. and served as Director-General for American Affairs in 1990–1992, is a very good personal friend of Obama. That makes that the UN is used as an instrument for US-interventions.
