Syria and Russia: Realizing Political solution to End Crisis

May 23, 2013

Syrian-Russian talks were resumed on Thursday between Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad and Deputy foreign Minister Michael Bogdanov.

The discussions concentrated on the ways to achieve the political solution to end violence in Syria and start the national dialogue among the Syrians through Syrian leadership, based on the inevitability of preserving Syria sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference in its internal affairs.

Both sides affirmed the need for realizing those goals as they are the basic reference in any move or effort to solve the crisis in Syria.

Ryabkov: Russian-Syrian Military cooperation Legitimate

On the other side, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that the Russian-Syrian military cooperation is legitimate, adding "it has no relation to any agreements that Russia has signed or any international resolutions."

"The US unilateral sanctions are unaccepted and considered as a violation of the international  law," Ryabkov said in a statement to INTERFAX published today.

Ryabkov's comments came following reporters by Washington Post that the US Senate's Foreign Affairs committee approved a draft bill on supplying weapons to the "Syrian Opposition" and imposing sanctions on countries which provide the Syrian government with oil or weapons.
