Hundreds of British jihadis returning from fight in Syria

As a reminder: 'Hundreds of British jihadis returning from fight in Syria spark terror alert in UK'

The terrorism threat to the UK posed by individuals who have trained and fought in Syria is "a big problem" for the security services and police, the immigration minister has said.

James Brokenshire told the BBC "a significant and growing proportion" of their resources was spent on the issue.

He said it was right to be "vigilant" about travel between the UK and Syria.

According to the Sunday Times, security services are "closely monitoring" 250 British-based jihadis linked to Syria.

The authorities are concerned that such people may be radicalised and militarised - and urged by those they come into contact with in Syria to turn their attentions away from the Syrian government and instead attack targets in the West.

Militants with suspected links to al-Qaeda have been heading to war-torn Syria from many other countries since fighting broke out in 2011.

Last week, a video was posted online showing British man Abdul Waheed Majid, who is thought to have carried out a suicide bombing in the city of Aleppo.

The 41-year-old, from Crawley, West Sussex, was believed to have bombed a jail on 6 February.

In an interview with Radio 4's The World This Weekend, Mr Brokenshire said he believed the "security concern" linked to Syria was "likely to be with us for the foreseeable future".

"A significant proportion and a growing proportion of the security services work is linked to Syria in some way," he said.

"This is a big problem that the security services and the police are actively focused on.

"It's why they are vigilant, why they are taking the steps that they are around the border and monitoring travel to and from Syria in the way that they are."

The Sunday Times says the number of individuals being monitored by MI5 and the police is much higher than previously reported, underlining "the growing danger posed by 'extremist tourists'".

Throughout January, 16 people were arrested on suspicion of terror offences after travelling between Syria and the UK - that compares with 24 in the whole of 2013.

Sir Peter Fahy, who leads the Association of Chief Police Officer's "Prevent" strategy on counter-terrorism, told the BBC last month those returning from Syria "may well be charged and investigated, but they will be put into our programmes".

He said those programmes saw police work with local agencies such as schools and youth organisations, "essentially to make sure these people haven't been affected and try and make sure they're not a threat to this country".

Last week, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said there were "a few hundred people going out there".

"They may be injured or killed, but our biggest worry is when they return they are radicalised, they may be militarised, they may have a network of people that train them to use weapons."

Information Minister: Arab League's Role in Syria Is Destructive

May 24, 2013

Information Minister, Omran al-Zoubi, said the Arab League (AL), with Syria's absence from it, is a failing institution that needs to reconsider its political and legal basics.

Answering the reporters' questions, al-Zoubi added that there is no room for the AL in any national cause because it lacks wisdom and sobriety and has overstepped all nationalist principles.

"The honest Arabs in the Arab League are counted on to put an end to the hegemony of political money and terrorism," he said.

The Information Minister affirmed that the Arab League's role in Syria is an unacceptably destructive one, saying that "any attempt to hinder the political solution under the pretext of pushing towards it is an exposed attempt."

Al-Zoubi voiced distrust in some of the AL members, saying that "those whom we don't trust can't play any role neither now nor in the future."

He made clear that the attempts of some Arab regimes to look for a role to play in Syria as "absurd and not possible", stressing that the AL must call off all its decisions against Syria and publically apologize to the Syrian people and government "and only then we can consider it."

He noted that Qatar, by providing funds to the terrorists, has violated the international resolution no. 1373 on combating terrorism, adding that if this decision was to be enforced, then the Qatari money should be put under control and the Qatari government should not be prevented from using the Arab people's money.

Washington: 'More weapons to Syrian terrorism because of it is effective'

Brussels, May 2th, 2013

U.S. officials said intelligence agencies are seeing signs that Syrian 'opposition forces may be distancing themselves from the al-Qaida-linked group there' - chipping away at one of the key arguments against giving lethal aid to terrorists and extremists.

Yet, at the same time, the terrorist groups are among the most effective against the regime.

Officials insisted Wednesday that no decisions have been made but said arming the terrorists is seen as more likely and preferable than any other military option. One U.S. official described a new "reconsideration" within the administration of the military options. The officials, who all spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss publicly the options under consideration, said most U.S. leaders prefer that the 'Syrians determine their own fate', so arming opposition groups and terrorists is more palatable than direct U.S. intervention.

The administration announced last week that it 'believes' Assad has used chemical weapons but said the intelligence wasn't clear enough to be certain that the regime has crossed President Barack Obama's announced "red line" of definite chemical weapons use that he said would have "enormous consequences" for Assad's government.

Some senior leaders, including Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are skeptical about the wisdom of providing arms to terrorist groups and (foreign) extremists. But officials say there is a growing realization that, 'under increasing pressure from Congress and other allied nations, the U.S. might soon have to do more'...

'Former IDF Chief: Syria chemical weapons must be met with response'

The decision to supply arms was already taken before...:

On April 20, 2013 the so called 'Syria’s opposition forces' and their main international allies met in Istanbul where the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, announced that the US will double its non-lethal military aid (US$123 million).  Meanwhile the so called Syrian opposition called on it's international supporters to deploy drones in Syria and carry out “surgical strikes” on launch sites used by government forces.

Cabinet Condemns Terrorist Bombing in Damascus

Apr 09, 2013

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – The Cabinet condemned on Tuesday the terrorist bombing which hit al-Sabe' Bahrat Square and al-Shahbandar area in Damascus.

During a session chaired by Prime Minister, Dr. Wael al-Halqi, the Cabinet noted that this escalation reflects the bankruptcy of the armed terrorist groups after the achievements made by the Syrian Arab Army, adding that targeting the Central Bank is a result of their desperation in wagering on the collapse of the national economy and the Syrian currency.

The Cabinet stressed that such acts will only increase determination to pursue the armed terrorist groups.

The Prime Minister reviewed the activities of the cabinet during the past week and the role of some activities in activating the commercial and development relations with some friendly countries to enhance the capacities of the national economy and providing the needs of citizens.

For his part, Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Walid al-Moallem, reviewed the political developments in the region and their reflections on Syria, stressing the ability of the Syrian people to face all challenges thanks to the Syrian Army and the determination of the people to make the upcoming national dialogue conference a success.

The Cabinet approved a bill on amending some articles of the legislative decree No 33 for 2005 concerning combating money laundering.

Syria: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemns terrorist bombings

Image

As a reminder:

November 29, 2012, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned ‘in the strongest terms’ the terrorist bombings which took place in the city of Jaramana in Damascus Countryside and claimed the lives of 34 people.

But at the same time he keeps silence about the U.S.-backed terrorism.

It is part of the UN comedy whereby also all the resolutions critical of Israel are blocked as the result of a deal between the U.S., Israel and the UN.

Ban Kin-moon and his staff mandated also a so called ‘no-fly zone’ and the NATO-bombing of Lybia. And on 31 October 2011 the Newsroom of NATO published the following distasteful ‘victory’ message: ”’We answered the call” – the end of Operation Unified Protector
‘After seven months of operations at sea and in the air NATO has ended its mission for Libya. The Alliance’s job to protect civilians from the threat of attack is done. On his historic first visit on 31 October to the Libyan capital of Tripoli, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was proud of the part the Organization and its partners played in helping the country and the region’.

On September 4th, 2012, Ban Ki-moon said in remarks to the General Assembly on Syria at New York: ‘The United Nations and its partners are doing all we can inside and outside of Syria. But we have to ask if we have done enough, and if we have done the right thing’.

Some days ago, General Selim Idris, Chief of Staff of the so called Free Syrian Army was in the European Parliament, where he was invited by Guy Verhofstadt, former Belgian Prime Minister and leader of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats ‘for Europe’.

Idris said that his army needed the West to supply “weapons and ammunition” so that his forces can “defend themselves.”

He said that, if such support arrived, “The regime will collapse in a month.” He added that Syrians ‘supporting the rebellion’ didn’t understand why the West had an arms embargo.

“There is no real action,” he said.

He was supported by Guy Verhofstadt, who said that there was “a growing consensus in Europe that the Syrian conflict cannot go on interminably.” The Liberal leader also said that arms should be supplied “in order that you can defend yourselves.”

Photo 1: Verhofstadt and Colonel Muammar Gaddafi a few years ago.  Some years later Verhofstadt pleaded in european parliament on a demogogic way to agree with NATO-bombings on Libya.

Belgian jihadists and weapons made in Belgium

Meanwhile, the Belgian State Security "has not confirmed" the rumor that Belgian jihadists are fighting in Syria. The newspapers 'Het Belang van Limburg' and 'Gazet van Antwerpen' argued the opposite: "The State Security confirmed the presence of Belgian terrorists in Syria".  Originally the Flemish newspapers relied on a report by Reuters, dated July 31th 2012, citing statements from "several rebel commanders in the north-west Syria," according to which "Muslims in Great Britain, Belgium and the United States had joined the Free Syrian Army (SLA)". On July 13th, Reuters pointed out a flood "of thousands of assault rifles Belgian FN FAL was in the hands of the rebels".  In its annual reports, the Belgian State Security explains how and why she follows people attracted by fighting abroad: there was attention for Iraq, then, from 2010, to the movement towards Pakistan-Afghanistan border area; Finally, most recently, to new locations: "If the Afghan-Pakistan area, more than Iraq, was still popular in 2010 with the majority of volunteers for jihad", the Belgian State Security wrote in his latest report, "some of them began to plot their way to Yemen, Somalia and the Caucasus". And Syria now? "Obviously. Where they are beaten, those who return and who actually participated in the fighting have gained knowledge on how to handle weapons, strategy and tactics of war," noted the Belgian State Security yesterday. "This is the central reason for the Belgian concern".

A list of the top 24 countries, among the more than three dozen that are currently involved in sending weapons to Syria to achieve a puppet government include: USA, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, UK, France, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Brazil, Portugal, Poland, Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, and Argentina.

Nearly two-thirds of the above listed arms suppliers are members of NATO and constitute almost half of NATO’s 28 country membership.

Belgian Senator Nele Lijnen said that she intends to launch a discussion at the Belgian Senate regarding the fact that the terrorists in Syria possess weapons made in Belgium.

‘Task Force to investigate Belgian participation in Syrian war’

Interior Minister Joëlle Milquet has launched a Task Force to look into the problem of Belgian youngsters going to Syria to join the civil war there. The Task Force will meet a first time on Monday and includes members of the counter-terrorism unit OCAD, intelligence services, the judicial authorities, the crisis centre and the police.

Over the past weeks, Belgian press reports told about Belgian Muslim converts travelling to Syria to take part in the war under the influence of the extremist organisation Sharia4Belgium. Although Sharia4Belgium was officially dismantled, it still has a big influence behind the scenes, it turns out. It is believed that 50 to 80 young Belgians left their homeland to fight in Syria.

The Task Force will try to find out how it can be avoided that even more youngsters join the Syrian war. Experts will monitor the present situation and examine how the youths can be brought back to Belgium.

Ms Milquet is not a supporter of new legislation to punish those joining the fights in Syria. However, last month anti-terror laws were given more scope. This implies that youngsters joining terrorist organisations to fight, will be subject to prosecution.

The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan.

2) British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain would step up its support for the armed groups in Syria, providing them with an additional £5 million (US$7.8 million). The money is used for terrorist bomb attacks and the undermining of Syria's government.

7) The seized weapons in Salqain district in Idlib included 7.26 guns along with other weapons as well as boxes of gunshots with the words "NATO BALL" carved on them.

8) The Lebanese army intelligence has seized a large quantity of wea Lutfallah II container pons hidden inside cars aboard an Italian ship at Tripoli port, north of Lebanon, Lebanese security sources told Al-Manar TV.

9) This comes just days after the Lebanese Army Marines confiscated Lutfallah II arms shipment off the Lebanese port of Batoun while it was carrying 300,000 pounds of weapons within three containers. Reports said the cargo ship, which was flying the flag of Sierra-Leone, had left Libya and was bound to Syria.

10) Lebanese terrorist Mohammad Hussein Fares confessed to participating in smuggling weapons, militants and journalists into Syria and committing terrorists acts against Syrians. Fares said that they smuggled assault rifles, RPG rounds, sniper rifles, LAW missiles, machineguns and cases of ammo, delivering them to Amoun, with al-Jarban coming later to distribute them among terrorists.

12) Over 30,000 various weapons have been channelled to Syria since unrest flared up there in April last year, Amin Khteit says. The overall amount of explosives makes up 300 tons. The deliveries were made by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They depend on the United States, which is making every effort to overpower Syria.

Syrian News: Google Censorship

The website of the Syrian Arab News Agency SANA is regularly blocked by Washington that doesn't stop its war propaganda.

Some days ago SANA was inaccessible again: 'Page Web inaccessible - Unable to load web page on Google Chrome, because www.sana.sy did not respond in time. It is possible that the site is blocked or you have problems with your Internet connection - Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)'

Google Research doesn't show actually SANA's website under the searching words 'latest news Syria'. The censure comes just after France and Britain recognized the so called 'Syrian oppossition', provided with money and weapons by the western countries.

The Internet search engines are in the hands of the U.S. government which doesn't want a political solution for Syria and doesn't stop its financial and military aid to terrorist groups in Turkey and Syria.
